Tips for talking to a car dealership

  1. Don’t tell them you’re paying cash until the end.
  2. Decline any warranties, protections, rust-proofing, CAA, key-warranties, etc. All of these can be done more cheaply after-market if you ever even need them.
  • Some dealers will give you an unreasonably high number, to begin with, so you feel good about negotiating down.
  • Other dealers start low, to get you in the door, and won’t budge more than a few hundred dollars.
  • Get your own financing in place, if you need it.
  • Avoid leasing a car at all costs — this is a massive waste of money (even after tax breaks if you're a corporation).
  • The highest profit margin is on extras — warranty, car washes, convenience packages, etc.
  • Do your own due diligence — get the car checked by an independent mechanic.
